ĠENN, Mackerel’s Funky Mission
Everything Sucks

If a song titled Mackerel’s Funky Mission doesn’t already have you totally hooked, then one beat of ĠENN’s latest single will. Flickering percussion and Mission Impossible-esque riffs overflow into a track that’s just a total groove – there’s no other word for it. It’s the latest cut from the Brighton alt-pop-funk team, taken from their upcoming EP Liminal, which comes out later this month, and promises to transcend anything you’ve ever heard before.

Mackerel’s Funky Mission does precisely what it says on the tin – it tells the tale of a fish exploring the world by sea, in a sonic ocean of glorious, groovy, funky noise. Vocalist Leona Farrugia delightfully drawls the story atop feather-light foamy instrumentals; she delivers with effortless cool and compelling wittiness. ĠENN utterly pull off what no-one else would even have thought to create, and they prove that in both lyricism and instrumentals, they’re surging forward in a formidable way. Blending classic disco vibes with ultra-fresh psychedelia, a swimming technicolour video-game daydream, Mackerel’s Funky Mission is a hypnotically tight tune.

It follows up the equally cool Feel, a more liquid offering that boasts dizzying basslines and ethereal delivery, and the Britpop-esque banger 23rd March, which is just addictively good with its grunged-up (yet still somehow shiny) guitar lines. ĠENN have already proved that they’re not just one of the most exciting acts on the scene – note by note, they’re redefining the lines of genre.

Liminal is out 30th March.
