Calva Louise, Trial
FRKST

After the release of POPURRÌ, Calva Louise are showing no signs of slowing down. Their summer EP comprised some of the most ambitious music of their career so far, a hissing thrill to listen to, and now they’ve returned with Trial, a fiery promise that there’s much more where that came from. It’s their first single after signing to FRKST Records along with frequent collaborators Strange Bones, and intensity levels have certainly soared to new heights.

What do you get when you mix gritty electronica, dreamy vocals, Franz Kafka, and science fiction? If Calva Louise are involved, you get an absolute banger. Dizzying from the very first beat, Calva Louise don’t give you much time to find your feet, preferring instead to hurl you into the middle of a sonic whirlwind. Frontwoman Jess Allanic is as viciously magnetic as ever, delivering swirling, descending lines of off-beat hisses and howls, otherworldly and vibrant.

Coming in at just under three minutes, Trial is a classic Calva Louise storm – short, sweet, and explosive. A rapid pace plus the unforgiving speed at which it kicks off makes for an addictive listen, and the haunting outro is a breather that really just builds the tension up for when you inevitably press repeat. Trial might feel like a totally triumphant victory lap, but we know Calva Louise. They’re barely getting started, so stay with them for the ride.

Trial is out now.
