Home Counties‘ effervescent guitar sound is dizzily exciting, and it’s only getting better with the release of White Shirt / Clean Shirt. As with their earlier tunes, you’d be hard-pressed to box them in – jangly melodies, brash vocal delivery and swirls of synth all cement the delightfully 2021-retro vibe HC have got going on, and make for some addictive listening.
White Shirt / Clean Shirt follows up January’s Modern Yuppies, and it’s equally as captivating in its sardonic tone and effortless swagger. This time, Home Counties spit their funky lines into a critique of the class circuit perpetuated by the public school system – ironic call and response sits on top of the slick, spacey instrumental, pitching the tune perfectly halfway between mockery and sharp critique.
As one of Phonograph’s Ones to Watch this year, Home Counties definitely look set to continue their ascent at pace, with a sold-out show at London’s iconic 100 Club already pencilled in for summer (please!). White Shirt / Clean Shirt cements their place in at the forefront of the scene, and we can’t look away.
