It’s really been the year of Sea Girls. Considering they haven’t even been to play any of their trademark euphoric live shows, they’ve really made sure that people stay adoring their addictive indie-guitar bangers with the wonderful Under Exit Lights EP, a triumphant debut album, and now they’re rounding everything off with the gloriously cathartic (and aptly titled) This Is The End.
This Is The End has all the Sea Girls calling cards, with the volume and the heart turned right up. Right from the beginning there’s a real sense of ‘oh, ok, the worst is over and maybe we’re actually going to be alright’. The lyrics are heartfelt, and rather than shooting for the ecstatic spark of Violet or the wild carefree vibe of early bangers like Too Much Fun, This Is The End really finds a place for contentment that’s just as danceable as Sea Girls always are.
At the end of a year like this, a few minutes of shimmering, swelling guitar and warm, buzzing melodies is sorely needed, and Sea Girls have proved that they’re the best band for the job. The instrumentals, as with the lyrics, manage to be laidback and upbeat at the same time – there’s enough slow-burn build to get energy mounting high, but somehow This Is The End feels sonically comforting at the same time, in the subtlety of the drums and the gleaming guitar lines.
In making a tune like This Is The End, Sea Girls have ensured they’re closing off the year as everyone’s favourite. This era of theirs might be over, but it’s a guarantee that as soon as shows are back on the road, Sea Girls will be bringing their glowing live show to life ASAP. They’ve rescheduled their Spring 2021 dates for Autumn 2021, so if you need something to look forward to, grab a ticket as you’re soaking up This Is The End.
