Somebody’s Child, CRAZY
Independent

Somebody’s Child haven’t finished with 2021 yet – it feels like a second since Hope, Amongst Other Things came out earlier this year, and they’re already unveiling new musical musings in the form of CRAZY, taken from upcoming EP Staying Sane. H,AOT and 2020’s 20-Something EP were coming-of-age magic to a T, but Staying Sane looks set to soundtrack youth in a more specific way than ever – written during last summer’s lockdown, it’s a reflection on the times we’re living in right now spun into the tales we’ll hear on the EP.

Lead single CRAZY is a romantic echo of the kind of introspection we’re all familiar with now – Cian Godfrey ruminates “how do you know if you are going crazy?” over an airy musical backdrop that effortlessly captures the uncertain-meets-carefree vibe of last summer, peppered with the odd background gang vocal and sunny synth moment. Lyrics like “maybe it’s the fact I’m missing you” sting a little more now that they’re transformed from simple love song clichés into knowing that we all spent last summer missing people we couldn’t see, but Somebody’s Child keep it as lighthearted as it needs to be.

With the knowledge that it’s inspired by lockdown, it’s easy to understand CRAZY’s lyrics, but there’s far more in there than just one level – the mundanity of Somebody’s Child’s aphorisms and genuine authenticity (“they say that you’re the average of your friends, but I was never good at maths so I can’t tell”) mean that CRAZY will stay timeless long beyond COVID era.

Staying Sane is coming soon, and CRAZY is out now.
