The Ninth Wave, Everything Will Be Fine
Distiller Records

The Ninth Wave have done it again. Their refreshingly dark alt-pop is as enthralling as ever on latest cut Everything Will Be Fine – and despite their trademark 80s post-goth-adjacent sound, they really do make it sound like Everything Will Be Fine. In even more optimistic news, EWBF is the first glimpse of a new Ninth Wave album as well, setting the tone for another slew of deliciously moody dancefloor fillers.

Everything Will Be Fine is as catchy as they come, strident and almost formidable in its upbeat-ness. The Ninth Wave force you to sing along through heavy hearts and minds burdened with whatever you may be carrying, repeating the title line like a mantra till we’re wrapped up in believing it. It’s definitely a hook that begs to be joined in with, so that’s the first step – but sonically, it’s impossible not to feel the tangible hope in the track. Reminiscent of acts like MUNA, M83, or MGMT, Everything Will Be Fine’s reverberating synths and cathartically blissful soundscapes strike you with that swelling feeling of melancholic joy. The Ninth Wave have captured that feeling, an overwhelming swelling of contendedness and release.

The original version of Everything Will Be Fine is intense enough, but The Ninth Wave clearly know what the track does – it’s end-credits music for driving into the distance knowing that this chapter is ending and another is beginning and that’s ok. So, of course, The Ninth Wave accompany the release with an all-the-more expansive ten minute long “Driving Version”, replete with even more echoing vocals, soaring mid-level melodies, and dreamy motifs. It’s as gorgeous as the original – all that remains is for The Ninth Wave to put together their own musical for it to soundtrack, Mamma Mia or American Idiot style. A tall order, so we’d settle for an album full of this magic.

Everything Will Be Fine is out now.
