Do Right, Cassia

Cassia have made quite the name for themselves with their upbeat, sunny festival-ready indie, and latest track Do Right continues on the trajectory they’ve set up, but also dips its toes into a moodier vibe than we’ve heard from Cassia so far.

Do Right knocks back your expectations straight away. We’re used to groovy beats, cheerful hooks, and light-hearted airy indie vibes – we certainly get groovy beats, but the quivering acoustic guitar underpinning the Macclesfield three-piece’s latest offering is quite the different tone to the fuzzy, crisp riffs of previous tracks. It sets a perfect tone for what’s to come: the vocalisation that weaves through the song dissolves into a thoughtful instruction: ‘do right and let the rest follow’. Certainly a sentiment that we can all take forward in the tumult that’s been 2020 so far.

Part of the hype surrounding Cassia has been their seamless blending of UK’s indie scene and afrobeat and Americana influences – certainly contributing to their instantly catchy, warm, summery sound. These influences are channelled on Do Right in a fresh way, flowing through the track in the guitar flourishes and chilled drum line.

Do Right is hypnotic, and Cassia have made an equally captivating video to go alongside the track, nestling in with visuals that are as relaxedly appealing as the song – they’re a band who clearly know what they’re doing, so what will they do next?

Do Right is out now via Distiller Records.
