Phonograph Ones to Watch Dolly and the Dinosaur are back with bite. Brand-new single Leftside harks back to the classic, guitar-driven sound synonymous with their raucous live performances and their early songs, and it’s got us feeling nostalgic for festivals gone by and at the same time, frothing at the mouth for what’s (hopefully) to come this summer.
Moody, swaying guitar lines? Check. Anthemic yet sultry chorus complete with earnest, lovely, singalong lyrics? You got it. A massive outro just made to be dragged out in front of a rioting crowd? Oh, definitely. D+TD are well and truly nailing it here. When we spoke with Tom about the track, he told us that they’d always considered themselves a band geared towards their live shows, and this really shows on Leftside – but striking a perfect balance with the detail of the song. There’s an intricacy and polishedness to Leftside similar to the band’s 2020 Sweet Talk EP, but with all the gritty, jump-around energy of a true live-show indie banger.
Leftside is an expertly crafted tune that bodes well for Dolly and the Dinosaur to simply pick up where they left off before COVID – aka well on the way to becoming one of the scene’s favourites. Except now with a whole year to finesse their sound and gear up for new material! Bring it on.
