Home Counties, Modern Yuppies
Alcopop! Records

After releasing their debut EP just last year, Home Counties are back with a restless art-guitar tune that promises they won’t be sticking within their boundaries. Modern Yuppies is daring, sharp, and charismatic to the max – it’s a hyper-polished, ambitious step, and Home Counties have certainly landed on their feet.

Home Counties’ guitar-indie sound is unrecognisable in the funk-laden mix, replete with wobbling synths and surreal SFX. Their jagged psychedelia jerks us between corporate bluster and dizzy panic in the most delicious way – this isn’t just the sound of Home Counties having fun, this is the sound of them materialising something really exciting for the future of guitar music. Following in the footsteps of the likes of FEET and Sports Team, Home Counties take it one step further and turn up the sonic saturation, layers on layers bubbling away beneath Will Harrison’s brilliantly sardonic vocals.

Turning social critique into disco tune is a task that Home Counties handle with panache. Their genuine comments on the plight of the Young Urban Professional are coated in just the right film of satire – the isolated “dying” that closes the track topping off the nihilist indie-psych in the best way. The instrumentals sizzle away, the vocals echo it swinging between flamboyant falsetto and blasé talk-singing, every aspect of Modern Yuppies is a seamless, ironically straight-faced addition to the mix.

Home Counties have created an outlandish, groovy delight in Modern Yuppies. It’s easy to see why they were named one of the Phonograph’s 21 ones to watch in 2021 – now we just can’t take our eyes off them.

Modern Yuppies is out now.
