Fontaines D.C., I Don’t Belong
Partisan Records

Fontaines D.C. announced the arrival of album number two with lead single A Hero’s Death a grinding, commanding call to arms. It delivered on the pace and viciousness we know to love from Fontaines, but their development from Dogrel shone clear, and it does even more so on new release I Don’t Belong.

It’s melancholy, a slow-jam in the most intense sense – solemn, moody riffs and walking-pace drums. Don’t think for a second that a slow track can’t possess the power of a rapid-fire one: Grian Chatten meanders through lyrics that are as authentic and authoritative as ever, laidback and magnetic all at once.

There are moments that hint at a build, a cymbal here, an accelerating bassline there, but for every bit of push I Don’t Belong pulls back. The wait for an explosion is almost agonizing – but we know it’ll come on the rest of the album. This is Fontaines D.C.’s way of tantalising us, and it’s worked: we’re on the edge of our seat. For a second look at one of the most anticipated albums of the year, Fontaines D.C. promise they’ve got us just as under their thumb as ever, and we can’t stop listening.

A Hero’s Death is out July 31st.
