The Clockworks, The Future Is Not What It Was
Cloud23

Fontaines D.C. have released a new track, and we’re buzzing about it… But also fresh out of the Irish punk scene, The Clockworks have unleashed the insistent, churning The Future Is Not What It Was, and it’s equally worth shouting about.

It’s only their third song out, but it’s remarkably polished. The tight, vicious instrumental is rife with cascading guitar lines like a slightly more jagged Foals, set against a speedy, steady drumbeat that serves to propel the track into eruption. TFINWIW is jam-packed with intent, that’s for sure, and the breakdown at the end is immense – while we’d love to hear a little more of its angular intensity all the way through, the build is so satisfying it rubs out any tiny complaints we could possibly have had.

Vocalist James McGregor’s delivery is somehow understated and a punch in the face all at once. It fits so comfortably amongst the power of the band that it counts as an instrument in its own right, an unrelenting condemnation of humanity’s failure to fulfil our futuristic dreams of times gone by. It’s anger, but moreover it’s panic – the driving force of the track, it drags you along through every skitter and jump.

The Clockworks have got the capacity to climb onto the podium as one of Ireland’s defining post-punk acts, and The Future Is Not What It Was serves as a mission statement. The Clockworks promise harsh reality set to unflinching musical backdrop, and we’re eagerly anticipating more.
