iamkyami, Lazygirl, When You Call
Heist or Hit
Teaming up with Lazygirl, iamkyami reaches new levels of groove on When You Call, the latest cut from upcoming mixtape The Kenny Klubhouse. Ky’s back catalogue so far consists of equal parts slick, moody, friendly, and bright RnB-pop tunes – a broad label for a sound that is actually wonderfully cohesive. They deliver the same dreamy depth across the board, rich atmospheres delivered subtly, the very definition of simple but effective. When You Call is such a fun tease, though, because it breaks this blueprint.
Lazygirl and iamkyami are clearly a duo that work well together, complementing the overlaps and the differences between their sounds (a trend across iamkyami’s selection of collabs!). When I Call is maybe the most synthy, dense track we’ve heard yet, though, abandoning the gentle sparkle of previous release Internet Friends for something darker and simmering with energy. Swirling, late-night vibes provide the backdrop for iamkyami and Lazygirl to take down the same fuckboi, at times sarcastic and at times sickly sweet –and at all times, too real.
When I Call brings the moody in spades, both in sound and in the self-aware lyrics willing to sacrifice it all for this boy – but positivity is just as key to the tune as the more emo side of things. This positivity looks like the synergy between iamkyami and Lazygirl, and it looks like the confidence that glitters all over the instrumentals too – an exciting taste of the variety that The Kenny Klubhouse is sure to offer.
The Kenny Klubhouse is out 29th April.
