Phoebe Green, Reinvent
Chess Club

Indie’s brightest rising star has just released her first track this year, and it’s just as shiny as we could have hoped for. Off the back of 2019’s support slot for Manchester icons Courteeners, and a glorious reception on tour with Swim Deep, Phonograph one-to-watch Phoebe Green has just put out the transformative, expansive Reinvent.

Reinvent leans further into the groovy, shimmering pop vibe that Green has hinted at before, and literally reinvents her sound as an electronic dream. The drums wouldn’t feel out of place on a MUNA track, ethereal backing vocals draw you out of darkness into a synth-heavy twilight, and Green’s effortless vocal delivery ensures that Reinvent stays feeling so close to home it’s practically holding your hand.

Green’s striking voice proves on Reinvent that it doesn’t have to be all soaring high notes to be absolutely magnetic. Sticking mainly to a low range, she sings lyrics that are stingingly real, speaking to drunk nights out and introspective relationships and spinning stories that are painfully vivid. Anyone’s been in Green’s shoes, wondering if you need to recreate yourself to appeal to people and finding yourself trapped in a cycle of doing so, but never until now have we had such a sparkling soundtrack to it.

Reinvent is out now.
