Strange Bones, Blitz Pt. 2 EP

If you google the word Blitz, (and ignore the American football/electric food mixer related results), you’ll find the word defined as “an intense or sudden attack”. It’s how vocalist Bobby Bentham describes Strange Bones’ upcoming EP Blitz Pt. 2, and no descriptor could fit more appropriately – just three songs long, the Blackpool punks condense inconceivable amounts of power into the short space of time, kicking in instantly and not letting up for a moment until the tumult subsides as viciously as it began.

Opener Napalm Über Alles is a whirlwind, opening with an electronic flurry before the jagged instrumentals rise up in full force, Bentham’s voice an echo both ricocheting around amongst the thuds and cascades of synth and drums, and floating above it, an omnipotent presence injecting the track with its power.  Underdogs is similarly vigorous, with drums that if they were isolated could sit comfortably on a dance track, but when combined with Bentham’s animalistic roars and howls and Strange Bones’ sweeping, brutal riffs, makes for a track that’s irresistibly unrestrained.

Closer Ten Guns is the only remaining song that’s not been released yet, and unsurprisingly, it’s got just as much bite as its predecessors. Strange Bones expertly manipulate the pace of the track, dropping back to single lines at times before the barrage of noise re-ensues for choruses that are nothing short of riotous. Bentham’s vocals dwindle, sounding dangerously controlled, before unleashing the chaos once more – Strange Bones throw you on a listening rollercoaster and it’s one you’ll never want to get off of.

Blitz Pt. 2 is a worthy follow-up for 2019’s Blitz Pt. 1: same passion, and simultaneously more polished and more wild. The Phonograph’s current AOTM, Strange Bones have got punk and electro on tight leashes, and they swing both genres round into a delicious tangle – having chewed up an unlimited range of influences and ideas, they spit out straight bangers, and Blitz Pt. 2 is no exception.

Blitz Pt. 2 is out Friday 10th April.
